The Mission of EAP-Training is to prepare today’s youth and families to make the transition from ideas and dreams to bringing businesses to scale with an entrepreneurial mindset. Our mission draws upon the past legacy of entrepreneurs who charted their way through business related education, role modeling, observation, purpose, resilience and achievements. EAP training intends to teach an understanding that business ownership and self-employment for families may be the vehicle to financial and social independence.

Module 1

Personal Development and Cultural Perspectives

What does our personal development have to do with the businesses we choose to set up, how we run those businesses and how those businesses succeed or fail? Our human development must be taken into account. The stages from infancy to old age are similar to the developmental stages of a business from idea, start, operation, and sustainability to success. If our personal development is strong because we know who we are or we work on ourselves, our businesses have a better chance of succeeding.
Our cultural perspectives – how we think, what we eat, the language we speak, our race, our history, the music we listen to, our faith, our rituals, our beliefs, our purpose – are a major indicator of who we are and further define us. When our culture is identified, acknowledged and respected, our businesses are less vulnerable to discrimination and racism.

Civic Leadership and Oratory Forum

I wrote to my Congresswoman about a grant I was unfairly rejected from getting! The next day I got a change of status from the grant maker. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of learning to advocate for what we need from our elected officials. Being aware of the climate in the community where our customers live, and being aware of legislative actions that affect our businesses are important. Speak truth to power to improve the conditions for our businesses and our industries.

Standard English is the language of business when doing business in the United States. It is vital that we be able to speak and write it. However, code switching will be required if we have a different cultural heritage. Business owners must also learn to speak the vocabulary of business, to effectively pitch and tell our stories. Like human development, this is an ongoing process.

Technology and Green Energy
Technology rules in both the business and in the project-based worlds. Technology also is evolving at a rapid pace. For example, cryptocurrency and cannabis are storming the marketplace. We can meet this challenge head on. We can prepare by getting computers and internet service, using our cell phones and getting on Social Media: Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and ClubHouse. We can set up a website and list our businesses in Ebony100.com to get a webpage with many features including a QR Code. These steps give us credibility and clients. Being involved in the green economy – buying green products and services, recycling, and composting in our business – will make our planet safer.

Business Communication and Marketing
Business communication, in my playful interpretation, covers the five senses of human development: sight, sound, smell, taste and touch. Sight – your business must be visible. Videos, logos and images reflect your purpose. Sound can be addressed with a theme song, slogan, motto or quote. Smell – being attractive in the room of our industry, our politics and our customers – leads to collaborating, investing, leveraging and trading with other businesses. Taste – our products and services solve problems. We can ask customers who use them to endorse and share them with others. Touch – we touch by communicating through business language, Standard English and business vocabulary. We still remember to use simple common sense to reach our markets with our commitment to serve even as we make money.

Module 5

Business Application and Planning

Our businesses thrive when we apply the fundamental principles of business operation. It is fine to start a business as a sole proprietorship and expand to other legal structures like LLC, SCorp, Corporation, or Partnership as we grow and make money. Banking and taxes are business components we need to learn about at this point in our development. Writing a simple, realistic business plan that describes where we are now and projects our strategy for growth and development helps potential investors and others to understand our business. What are our capital investment, start up and operating costs? How will we get sales going or get investment to pull it off? We can identify a team to support our business including an accountant and a lawyer.
